More Windows Horror

I occasionally refer to the operating system that Microsoft sells for PCs as the Horror That Is Windows, or even something uncomplimentary.

I recall the time I watched in amazement and mounting disbelief as someone was trying unsuccessfully to save a file as a PDF. The minutes seemed to tick away like hours as she struggled to find some secret method to achieve what any Mac user can easily do just by selecting Save as a PDF from the Print menu.

Windows notepad.

Now comes word that Microsoft has finally—Finally!—added spellcheck to the Windows Notepad app.

With this update, Notepad will now highlight misspelled words and provide suggestions so that you can easily identify and correct mistakes. We are also introducing autocorrect which seamlessly fixes common typing mistakes as you type.

As John Gruber rightly points out:

Better late than never, but it’s kind of wild that Notepad is 41 years old and only getting these features now. I haven’t used a single Mac app that doesn’t offer the system’s built-in spellchecking for over 20 years.

What has Microsoft been doing all those years?
