Or commonly known as miracle berry.
It has the amazing ability to make sour foods taste sweet. At least some sour foods. What it does is block the tongue’s taste buds from sensing sour flavors. So if the food has sugars, such as lemons or grapefruits, the suppression of the sour taste makes it seem sweet. Semi-sweet things taste sweeter.
The effect lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes in most people.
As coffee does not have any sugar content, it does not work on black coffee.
Some of the foods that I’ve found that it works on, in addition to lemons and grapefruits, are plain yogurt, limes, strawberries, and blackberries. It does not work on blueberries, probably because they have no sour taste to begin with.
You can find miracle berries that have been processed into tablets, but they are somewhat diluted. I’ve found that the dried half-berries seem to work best, but of course, your mileage may vary.
They tend to be a bit pricey, so they are mostly a novelty item. But if you’re serious about cutting back on sugar and prefer not to rely on artificial sweeteners, they can come in very handy.
