Well, I’m here to say that there is no evidence that that ever happened.
And I realize that by repeating the rumor, I’m just giving it more air.
He was TR’s handpicked successor, but TR quickly soured on him as he didn’t do exactly what TR wanted him to do.
Still he kept on busting trusts, and he was his own man. That’s what TR didn’t like. TR just couldn’t let go of the spotlight.
He served just one term, and later on became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
