Herbie did not cause the Great Depression, oh, sorry—Herbert Hoover didn’t cause the Great Depression, but he didn’t know how to deal with it either.
And then there was the forcible deportation or “repatriation” of about a million Mexican-Americans to Mexico, approximately 60 percent of whom had been born in this country. Perhaps that’s why Archie Bunker liked Herbie so much. I’m sure he’d fit in quite well with the modern Republican Party, and sadly, with several of my cousins and former high school classmates, the ones that don’t speak to me anymore.
He wasn’t any good at dealing with the veterans of the Great War either.
Just a total failure.
