Emergency!

I had a different post planned for today, but then fate intervened.

I try to keep some fresh parsley in a jar of water on my counter so it’ll be readily available, and this morning I noticed that the parsley had turned quite yellow and could no longer be regarded as fresh.

So I chucked it into the garbage disposal and to my horror the disposal chucked it right back at me.

Well, not the parsley itself, but after a moment of chewing on it, it made a terrible racket and filthy water came spewing out of the drain.

I’ve seen that before, so I gave it another few seconds, and sure enough it began to drain away again to my relief, but then I noticed that the water was coming out underneath the sink.

So I called the plumber.

Who couldn’t come until next week.

He recommended Express Drains, as that’s all they do all day, clean out drains. In fact, a similar thing happened four years ago shortly after I moved into this house. I called the plumber then and they recommended Express Drains and they came and fixed the problem.

So I called and they said they could come between 10 and 2. Fine, I said, although I really wanted them here now.

But not to worry. A few minutes later John texted me. He could be here at 9:00. Would that be OK? The sooner the better, I replied.

He and his helper got here right after 9:00 and in no time they had the drain free running again.

As it turned out, the problem was a clogged drain, not a clogged garbage disposal, as I had thought. So it wasn’t my fault. Well, maybe it was my fault, in that a gradual accumulation of junk in the drain may have been my fault, but it wasn’t my fault in that I stuck too much into the garbage disposal at one time.

As they were going out the door, I said to them, “I ought to have more emergencies. You guys always fix things up in no time flat.”

But it did throw off all my plans for the day. Including working on the post that I had originally planned for today.

  1. Oooh, yuck! Brown stuff? Spewing back at you?!! Did you not learn to not put stuff down the drain? And not down the garbage disposal?

I learned this lesson years ago. Not sure what the garbage disposal is for if you’re not supposed to put anything in it or down the drain per our plumbers. But there you are. And run a bunch of ice cubes through the disposal/drain about once a month.
