Gunning for Superman

I was upset when I received the Blu-ray of the new Superman movie and found out that there was no commentary track by the director on it but that if you wanted to get James Gunn’s commentary you needed to buy a digital version of the movie.

Well, I thought, that’s a betrayal of those of us who shelled out for the Blu-ray.

As it turned out, however, it may not have been quite as nefarious as I first thought. From what I heard later on, Gunn was late in recording his commentary and it wasn’t ready in time to add to the Blu-ray.

But if you bought the Blu-ray, there is a way to get the commentary track.

All you have to do is create a free account on the Movies Anywhere site. It’s completely free. Really. You don’t even have to give them your email address if you have an Apple account. Just use Apple’s handy Hide My Email feature.

Then redeem the digital code that came with your copy of the Blu-ray:

Redeem digital movie.

Reminder: if you have an Apple device you can use the camera to copy the code, for later pasting. No need to manually type it in.

When you go to play the movie you should see something like this with the Director’s Commentary:

Movies anywhere superman.

So I played the movie and used Audio Hijack to record the commentary (I muted it so as not to spoil anything as I haven’t watched the movie yet), then I took that track and added it to the copy of the movie that I had previously ripped and added to my Plex library. I highly recommend Audio Hijack for those of you who have Macs. You can save audio from any website, as well as any application running on your Mac. And a lot more. Very handy.

I guess I should have called this post How to Get the Commentary Track if You Bought the Superman Blu-ray. (I may or may not have something to say about the movie itself once I watch it and why I finally decided to get a Superman movie after skipping a bunch of them for all those years.)
