Last Night of Fireworks

Quote of the day:

Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country are busy driving taxicabs and cutting hair.
—George Burns

It’s been fun watching the game of cat and mouse as user geddylee uploads the BBC Proms concerts and YouTube cancels his account (presumably due to complaints from the BBC), only to have him come back a day later with a new account under the same name just a higher tag number at the end. The account name is now geddylee505 and it’s been stable for several weeks. As the Proms concerts are now complete, perhaps this account will stick around for awhile.

This year the conductor for the Last Night of the Proms was the young Hong Kong conductor Elim Chan. I’ve cued the video to start at the new work Fireworks by the French composer Camille Pépin, which was commissioned for this performance. It’s a short work, as one of the hosts describes it its a combination of French impressionism and minimalism. Following that, Elim Chan gives a very short speech and then she launches into the Dukas Sorcerer’s Apprentice
