Silvestre Revueltas

If everyone is thinking alike, then no one is thinking.

Silvestre revueltas.I was going through my music library a few days ago and came across a recording of orchestral music by the Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas (1899 – 1940) that I purchased in 2010 and listened to a couple times and then forgot about.

I don’t know why I purchased it, and there are no liner notes as I bought it from Amazon, probably before they started adding liner notes to their digital music. Most likely I read an article about a performance perhaps in NYC and the description sounded interesting so I decided to try it out. I do that from time to time. Or used to anyway.

Well, I hadn’t listened to the album since shortly after purchasing it, so I played it and I liked it. Very highly rhythmic music.

The lead piece is a short work called Sensemayá, and apparently it’s fairly frequently performed, as I found several YouTube performances. Here’s one from Ukraine where the conductor gives a very brief description of the piece before launching into it.

If you’re listening to this in the morning with your first cup of coffee or tea, it should help to wake you up.
