I had something completely different planned for today, in fact it’s already written and ready to go.
And then I read CJ’s blog post yesterday, “It’s called empathy”, and I watched the video that she embedded, and I decided to go with that.
The Thoreau quote that the video uses reminded me of something that Atticus Finch says in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird:
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
By the way, if you only know that book from the excellent 1962 movie that was made from it, you really owe it to yourself to read Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel. There’s a lot in there that couldn’t be crammed into a two hour film.

Besides the empathy side of it, I show it to my students to remind them to act professional no matter where they are in the hospital, be it the cafeteria, the elevator, etc. Because you just never know what kind of news the person near you has received or what battle they might be fighting and it’s okay to have fun at work but be professional!
