— Jerry Herman

I have belatedly begun watching Julian Fellowes’s The Gilded Age, his prequel of sorts to Downton Abbey.

I’m about halfway through it and as much as I’m enjoying the drama and the interactions of the characters (real and fictional), it’s the bits of history and historical locations that are really grabbing me.

And so the additional details of the period that are provided by the Official Gilded Age Podcast are just as much fun as the series itself.

So why did it take a Brit to highlight this rich period of American history for us? Why can’t our film and tv makers give us more of our history?

Oh, well.

By the way, can you identify the show and the song that my opening Jerry Herman quote comes from?
