When I was watching a Burns and Allen show rerun back in the early 1960s, in response to a question Gracie gave some non sequitur reply that included:
Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.
I had no idea what it meant, but the phrase stuck with me.
It wasn’t until 10th grade history class with Mr. Kugle that I finally learned that Tippecanoe was a battle that William Henry Harrison had won against some American Indians in 1811, and it was so famous that it was used as a campaign theme to propel him and John Tyler into the White House in the election of 1840 (Americans had longer memories in those days apparently).
Not that it did old Tippecanoe Harrison much good. He only served a month in office before dying from an illness possibly contracted during his inauguration.
I tried to find the Gracie Allen clip where she utters those immortal words, but I failed. Here are some of her other good lines though.
