Final Jeopardy

Quote of the day:

When stupidity is considered patriotism, it is unsafe to be intelligent.
—Isaac Asimov

I stopped watching the game show Jeopardy! years ago because it was no longer fun, at least for me. The contestants had become much too invested in winning at any cost rather than just having fun playing the game and they became cutthroats as far as I was concerned, and I found myself rooting against all of them. Plus, they were no longer picking the clues in order, they were randomly picking the clues to try find the Daily Doubles, so if there was some sort of logical buildup in the order of the clues, that was completely lost. And I hated the rule change that allowed the champion to keep winning indefinitely. I always rooted against the champion, figuring that winning one time was enough for anyone, and I especially rooted against that jerk Ken Jennings.

But I have a google search that sends me a daily email on mentions of Asimov on the internet and apparently Isaac Asimov was the subject of the Final Jeopardy clue on Friday July 18, 2025. Here it is:

Expanding on a word created by a Czech playwright, Asimov coined this term in 1941 for a branch of science that didn’t exist yet

Final Jeopardy Clue July 18, 2025.

The category was Science Words and of course, I knew that one instantly, being the Isaac Asimov fan that I am.

It was in a short story in the early 1940s and at the time Asimov didn’t realize he was coining a new word, he just figured it was a logical word and used it.
