Having mentioned “Witch Doctor” the other day, I had to look to see what was available on YouTube, and there is a video of David Seville performing it. Well, lip-syncing to it.
I remember those nonsense syllables so clearly after all these years: “Oo! Ee! Oo-ah-ahh. Ting. Tang. Walla-walla bing bang. Oo-Ee! Oo-ah-ahh. Ting tang walla-walla bing bang.”
This was shortly before David Seville invented the Chipmunks and had an even bigger hit with “The Chipmunk Song”, which sold four and a half million copes in seven weeks. Well, according to Wikipedia, but it’s figures look a bit self-contradictory to me. I think they’re mixing up singles and albums.
David Seville’s birth name was Ross Bagdasarian, and under that name he played the role of the composer in Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece Rear Window.
