In my Penn State days my music listening habits pretty much changed to mostly rock and pop music. This was partly the influence of The Beatles, partly the influence of the change of environment, and I guess partly just expanding my musical horizons.
And the late 60s just happened to be the period when the rock and pop music world was awash with experimentation, largely a result of The Beatles and Bob Dylan and various other musical innovators of the time.
One problem was that sometimes worthy entries got lost in the shuffle.
For example, The Incredible String Band.
I remember getting their album “The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter” and enjoying it, but I probably only played it a few times before it was put on the shelf only to be forgotten amid all the other music coming out at the time. I suspect that the last time I played the album was sometime in 68 or 69.
But I was reminded of it recently and I found it on Apple Music and listened to it during lunch yesterday. If you ignore the somewhat pretentious lyrics (a relic of the times), the music is quite enchanting. Hard to classify. Folk rock, some say. Or psychedelic folk, say others. Whatever. I’ve embedded the Youtube playlist for the album below (I think).
